When initially learning how to make Macintosh applications, the first project we began work on was Suspend: a small app that allows its user to “pause” the CPU processes underlying any application, so as to free up more of your computer’s power in times of need. Requiring an icon of its own, we devised two different graphics to brand Suspend – those shown above. The first, depicting the generic “application” symbol half-frozen amidst a cube of ice, proved to be the final choice. However – while ultimately unused – the other is still regarded with affection, and represents a science-fiction movie “statis tank”, fictionally used to hold its contents in suspended animation.
